Learn Something New #9: Diabetic Retinopathy

At the Center for the Partially Sighted (CPS), we see mainly low vision patients but there are certain days where we are assigned to see diabetic patients. If you didn't know already, diabetes manifests in the eye and can have some serious sight-threatening consequences. This manifestation is widely known as diabetic retinopathy, or "DR".

First week of Rotation 2

This week was my first week of the 2nd rotation, which includes the Center for the Partially Sighted on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday; this rotation also includes school screenings on Wednesdays and SCCO's outpatient clinic in downtown Los Angeles (aka OCLA) on Saturdays. This past Monday and Tuesday involved my orientation to CPS, and today was my first day of patients at the Center for the Partially Sighted (CPS).

So long VAWLA, CPS here I come!

My days at the VA West Los Angeles are running out...my last day is Wednesday! I enjoyed my rotation here very much; the staff doctors were incredibly helpful and thorough in teaching us interns about different ocular disease. The main diseases that I learned a lot about were cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and age-related macular degeneration (see this previous blog about a patient that had all of this stuff!). I also learned how to be more efficient with exams since, as compared to third year, we see patients here 5 days a week so repeating the motions further ingrains the techniques so they become more and more like second nature. When the fourth years told me that during rotations your learning sharply increases, they weren't kidding!
